“Prism Theatre Company’s second annual Festival of New Works will focus on spotlighting the work of local emerging playwrights and artists, will feature staged readings of 6 new plays over the course of 2 weekends. Performed by a diverse cast of local actors, this festival will allow the featured playwrights the opportunity to further develop their work and receive audience feedback. We cannot wait to share these incredible, fresh stories with you at High Low literary cafe September 22nd-October 1st! Each evening, there will be talkbacks with the playwrights, actors, directors, and artistic team at Prism so that the audiences can give their feedback to the playwrights and learn more about the process.
This year’s festival line-up will be as follows:
That Thing with Feathers by Steven Doloff (Thursdays and Saturdays): a short play that explores the emotional ups and downs of submitting your work to a new plays festival
Guinevere/Lancelot by Kasey Kopp (Thursdays): a modern twist on a classic tale, this play questions the roles that women actually play in our histories and our legends, and why their stories are often overshadowed by those of men.
Beautiful Daughter by Wyn Alyse Thomas (Thursdays): a short play that highlights the often-complicated, but always loving, relationship between mothers and their daughters.
woof! by Joshua Douglas (Fridays): a heartwarming story that explores the different ways that we deal with grief, and the unlikely friends that help us through the hardest times of our lives, and allow us to find peace on the other side.
Ten Kids on Haddock Drive by Norah Brozio (Fridays): Ada Donovan is raising nine kids all by herself. After her husband is put in a psychiatric hospital, Ada is left to handle kids dealing with everyday problems but also disabilities, identity crises, and financial stability. With the majority of her kids in high school, this year may very well be the hardest one yet. Inspired by true events, this play covers the chaotic but heartwarming life of a Missouri family.
Lift by Laurie McConnell (Saturdays): a heavy romantic comedy, set in the city of St. Louis shortly after the upholding of the Muslim Ban in the United States in 2018. This play follows the unlikely budding relationship between two very different people who find themselves stuck together in an elevator.”
