Hail Hail Chuck Berry

by Nate Burrell

The Dark Room

One of the fascinating aspects of live music is just that: it’s a LIVE performance. It’s a shared experience between the artists on stage and the people in the crowd, and it only happens one time; once the show is over and the lights go down, that unique performance is in the history books, never able to be exactly replicated again.

The concert or performance is the gift for the fans, it’s why we buy the ticket; however, what we rarely see, or often forget, is how much work, practice, energy, and attention to detail musicians put into bringing the live show to the big stage. The images in this series pull back the curtain on that creative process and give an intimate look at a diverse group of musical strangers coming together from all corners of the U.S. to pay tribute to Chuck Berry.  From obscure rehearsal spaces to the main stage event, these photographs capture a behind the scenes look at the musicians who have helped celebrate the sound and music of one of Rock & Roll’s greatest legends.

About the artist

Featuring an encompassing look at today’s music landscape, my work tells visual stories that make you feel as though you are out on tour & part of the show. Working with publications on feature articles, as well as helping artists and labels build visual branding campaigns, I provide an all-access look through concert photography, press + promotional campaigns, studio recording sessions, album packaging, art direction, and tour documentation.

Some of the clients I’ve collaborated with include: SPIN Magazine, Rolling Stone, Billboard, American Songwriter, Bob Weir + Tri Studios, Jason Isbell + Amanda Shires, Pokey LaFarge, Voice Media, SF Weekly, St. Louis Magazine, Riverfront Times, Dawson Denim, City Winery Chicago, Rounder Records, Bloodshot Records, El Marko Records, Listen Live Entertainment, and a bunch of other good folks.
